Common Sense?

Something about going to hell just doesn’t seem right anymore!

As painted by the early Hell’s fire and Brimstone preachers, you would think it’s best to avoid hell altogether. Those famous preachers were all over the place. They brought a revival that was swift, brutal, and could leave a man (or woman) shaking in fear and in tears.

Repentance? It was a definite must do! That is, if you wanted to avoid an eternity of pain and suffering. Even today, drawing closer to God is pretty much not going to happen if you don’t follow the sign and make an extreme and urgent U-turn!

Although the old folks know this, it seems a crying shame that the new folk can’t grab
at the concept! They believe that Jesus is just alright with your sin! Where did Jesus ever do an about face on sin?

It seems that somewhere in the past few years sin has been downgraded to less than a misdemeanor. Back in the day, going against what your parents taught you would cause you to get a severe belt whipping, and the consequences didn’t stop there. There were strict rules that you had to comply with. (Penalty of sin?) And if you kept at it (rebellion), you would eventually get in trouble with the law.

Fast forward to today and we have parents that get in trouble with the law. It’s a rare thing if the domino effect doesn’t take place, because there are a select few children who don’t follow their parents footsteps! But the domino effect still takes place nonetheless.

A prime example: An alcoholic father. We all have had our experiences with alcoholics. Most of the time, it’s not a good one either way. Alcoholics can and will turn abusive in their relationships with others. They tend to care about nothing else but their next bottle, their next conquest. The same thing can hold true about power hungry people.
It’s no wonder that both types of people are among the loneliest people of the world. but both ways do not consider the error of their ways, and what happens is that later down the line, they do reap what they sow…

You just can’t ride that way. I know we all try to walk on that thin brick wall. We all try to walk the fine line, hoping (thinking, believing) that it will work out well for us. But it’s an accident waiting to happen. And it will! It will!

If I decide to stay in my sinful past, then it’s an empty thing. It’s a lifetime of self-inflicted pain. It slowly kills me, and spreads to those around me. Greed will do me in, but will lead my family, and my friends to think of me in a negative way. It will cause people to mistrust me and cause complete failure in my workplace. Everything I do is about self-gain. I no longer consider the feelings of others, only my own.

I really do put people through a living hell if I expect them to do things my way.

This is exactly where the church is today…so many pastors are set on doing it their way. but man’s way leads to self gratification, greed, bitterness, destruction.

So many of the prophets of the Bible have warned us not to go our way. We simply can’t! If we go our way, then a big, black pit will open up beneath us and devour us!
We simply cannot go against what the Bible preaches! We can’t allow adulterers, homosexuals, idolaters, drunkards, witchcrafters, and any other sin to come in and interrupt what the church was meant to be. We can’t allow sorcerers to take over center stage in God’s house!

And anyone who preaches God’s Word in a way that it appeals to all, is not doing anyone a favor.

The people feared Moses! They feared Elisha! They feared Jesus!

But we love a good word! We love to be entertained!

I hate to use it, but the old saying comes to mind:

“What the hell is going on?!”

Why are we so intent to go running into hell? Why are we so eager to place our brothers’ hand on the burning stove?

The church needs an extreme overhaul! Preaching candy-coated words, and giving a false impression that Jesus is just Alright is just not Alright…it’s a damnation. It’s introducing people to a false messiah, a false Lord, and the anti-Christ!

Jesus came on the scene well over 2,000 years ago. He came with a sword and a harsh word! As old time Christians, most of us were brought to the saving grace of Jesus Christ because we recognized that we were ling in sin and that we desperately needed a Savior!

But in churches today…sin isn’t even mentioned! You know I often hear of many Christians saying that they won’t go see such and such movie, or follow certain people, or attend rock concerts because everyone is evil, following the anti-Christ, etc.
All the while these same Christians are going to church every weekend…where the talk of sin and repentance is carefully excluded.

The question I have is….what is the church going to do about it?

For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 1 Peter 4:17

He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 2 Thessalonians 1:8

if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. 1 Timothy 3:15

“So I will come to put you on trial. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive the foreigners among you of justice, but do not fear me,” says the LORD Almighty. Malachi 3:5

changesI wanted to send out a short blog post today. Due to an enormous amount of spam, I’ve disabled my primary email account, the one I usually get all my subscriptions sent to. So I might not be getting notified of any new blog posts. I think I’ve moved it over to a secondary email address, but not completely sure.

Also, I’ve upgraded to the new Windows 10, which is a completely new headache as I’ve always been a sticker for the wonderful operating system that Windows Vista was.
Unfortunately, apparently you cannot browse the web or do anything anymore in Vista.

Unfortunately progress is something we have to live. We have to adapt to the changing face of technology. I’m an old shoe who doesn’t want to fit.

It seems that it was just like yesterday that I was poking around in DOS and Windows 3.1. The internet was something that was just getting started. You didn’t have the kind of information you do today.

Flying cars are still things you see in movies.

Thank God His Word never changes! 🙂

It’s Time to Start Talking About Hell Again

Hell. It’s been largely lost from the church

“Therefore My people go into captivity because they have no knowledge; and their honorable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst. Therefore Sheol has enlarged itself and opened its mouth without measure; so their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he who rejoices shall descend into it” (Is. 5:13-14).

My apologies to the few Pastors who preach a harsh word!

If ultimate, eternal judgment would visit God’s very people, Judah and Jerusalem, due to their drinking and partying ways, what is to become of those who openly rebel and reject God and His mandates? Many churches have gone the way of perhaps the computer, or better yet the smartphone. They have become too user friendly. The talk about, or against sinful living has gone to the doghouse. Everything about the church has been reduced to family entertainment. Most churches, and even Christians, won’t talk about the issues that the Bible points out. I don’t know if it’s because they are trying to reel people into the church to simply expand their numbers (and/or even possibly their pocket books.) Most will talk about the social issues of the modern age, but have found a way to appeal to all. A lot of the churches I have been to have been reduced to a weekly sermon on how marriage is supposed to work out.

The church has done itself a grave injustice by refusing to connect sinful living with the clear expected outcome of eternal torment. Our arguments against the homosexual movement and the horrifying evil on display at Planned Parenthood clinics in our nation have been reduced to a debate about morals and human rights. And that’s happening within the church walls itself! As a Christian, I have never found a reason to “debate” immorality, nor for that matter human rights. Immorality causes heartache. Period! Human rights? As I have struggled with past events, I’ve found that the only human rights we are entitled to are the right to breathe, and the right to interact, or not to interact with others. That’s it!

Now let me say that I am on the side of life. Always. I think that Planned Parenthood is something that was started as nothing more than selfish population control AND the need for sexual gratification. In other words, it’s a quick fix to a mistake. The mistake is obviously needing to get your rocks off. It’s no wonder we are accused of hatred when we are standing in the way of behavior that so many argue has no real impact on society. We have been forced into a position of analyzing metrics that reveal debatable negative trends in our culture that are a result of the behavior that we abhor.

However, the pro-abortion crowd is convinced that legal abortion is healthy and appropriate. Sex is also healthy…although at times it is not appropriate at all! When you know, fully well, that you do not have the mental, or even financial capacity to care for a baby, but still find yourself pregnant, then that’s a clear sign of stupidity. Another sign of stupidity, and selfishness is aborting a fetus/baby when there are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of people out there who would be blessed by adopting that unwanted child.

Homosexuality, or which is hopefully well known that I am against,  has an even stronger position that their behavior is personal and private and what happens behind their closed doors has no impact on you or me. Of course, this has turned out to be a lie. For one: I care about the homosexual’s soul, and where they are headed if they do not repent. But this isn’t being as fiercely preached in the church anymore. We have pastors who have fallen into the ditch and performed the nuptials at gay weddings. All of a sudden their churches are gay friendly and instead of taking the opportunity to deliver a scorching sermon, they preach about the love of Jesus!

And I am sorry, but the homosexual behavior does have an impact on my life. Such business that years ago was limited to being behind closed doors, has now come out of the closet and into the streets of the city, country, and nations. And we see that it’s now more acceptable to be gay than Christian. Sadly, where Christianity once had an aggressiveness to it, it’s bowed down to the aggressiveness of Homosexuality. Because let’s face it: we certainly don’t want to offend a Homosexual!

It doesn’t make sense for a preacher of the Word to appeal to those not in Christ! Not anymore! And truthfully, it never did. We see this with Lot’s plea to the men of Sodom. We see it in Noah’s plea for the people to enter into the ark!

I struggle sometimes with the fact that perhaps we are left preaching to those with deaf ears in this generation. It’s a wicked, wicked generation. And yes, this is the last generation we will ever see. After we are gone, either to heaven or to hell, there will be no generations left!

But the church’s playfulness has me wondering, has me hungering for more righteousness. You see, the church is preaching to those who are not in Christ. And what it’s preaching is not the fire and brimstone that it should. You really go in and out of today’s church and you remain the same person when you go out than when you do when you went in! In short, the message of the cross is lost in translation there is often no transformation.

Planned Parenthood. It shouldn’t even exist! But we need it because we need someone to take care of our problems for us. We need a Christian baker to bake us a gay wedding cake because there are no gay owned bakeries to serve us. Hello!!!!! If there are no gay owned wedding cake bakeries then perhaps that should be sign to you! Don’t go punishing someone because they refuse to bake you a cake for your iniquities!!!! I’m not for any political themes, but it’s important that we vote for political candidates who will help restore our nation to its Christian roots by confronting the advances of various special interest groups. Additionally, as many Christians propose, we should function in great love when dealing with others who don’t support our biblical worldview.

However, as I said, stopping there compromises our efforts.

We will always look like haters if we demand people adhere to our code of values.

We will always look passive and with little concern if we simply grin and tell people that Jesus loves them. That’s only half the story!

The reason we so passionately sound alarms and alert homosexuals, abortionists, pornographers, liars, thieves, murderers and others who are living outside of God’s brilliant plan for their lives is simple—we are broken over the fact that they will be tormented non-stop, forever with no relief in hell.

We need to let them know that heaven won’t be the same without them! Hell must not win on the day of their physical death!

“His fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean His floor and gather His wheat into the granary, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire” (Matt. 3:12).

As a  Christian, I was forced to encounter that my sins, each and every one of them, would, and could land me in a lake of eternal fire. Separated by the love of God. It wasn’t a very nice encounter. I’ve learned that being born again isn’t an overnight sensation. It takes years, perhaps even a lifetime, of going through extreme circumstances and even saying “NO!” over a multitude of times, to sin. Have I struggled? Have I fallen? Yes! time and time again. But I still get back up, and I still have hope. But the more I look across the country, and the lives of many, many people that hope is gone! Many have given up! The Word of God is nowhere to be found because of the pressure to adapt to an evil society. We have become much like Aaron who allowed the people to rise up a golden calf. But when Moses came down off that mountain, Aaron sure did a quick turnaround. The people ended up drinking the remains of their idol. That’s a harsh reality that is gone from today’s church preaching. The reality that God’s word is just as fierce as it is loving.

The preachers of God’s word, themselves being Christian, know that there is no chance of ever coming out of hell. There’s no exit door. Many Christians, who claim to be saved, and following Jesus are yet not saved. They are filled with bitterness, pride, and a whole multitudes of demons who constantly feed off them, and then regurgitate over and over again. I absolutely have a fear for those self-proclaimed Christians when God tells them “Depart from me, you workers of iniquity!” What a horrifying thing to hear! Sadly, the great falling away is a reality. We have Christians today who will only endure for a very short time, because they will proceed to go chasing after things and doctrines that truly don’t matter. But if this is true for Christians, what then is to be expected for those who openly defy God?

We must see a return to Holy Spirit-anointed preaching on hell. We must warn people, with tears in our eyes, that they are headed there!

“Enter at the narrow gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who are going through it, because small is the gate and narrow is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it” (Matt. 7:13-14).

God doesn’t need a publicist.

I’m dismayed by the radical shift away from full-counsel preaching of the Word of God.

I don’t know how often I’ve heard people say that preaching on hell results in fear—and there is no fear in love—and so we must avoid it at all costs.

This demonically twisted wisdom has resulted in a massive resistance to large segments of the Bible in the hopes that highlighting the benefits would be enough to woo people to Christ.

Yes, the benefits are awesome! But you gotta believe that they only apply to those who seek the counsel of God, rather than man!

“But I will warn you whom you shall fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell. Yes, I say to you, fear Him”(Luke 12:5).

Today we have evangelism that is based upon smooth words. Everyone knows that Jesus loves them, but not everyone needs to hear that. John The Baptist didn’t come on the scene with the love gospel, and in fact, no one really leads a lifestyle of repentance when they hear how much Jesus loves them. This results in a new breed of deceived religious people who believe they are safe but are most likely not. Repentance is non-negotiable.

This isn’t a time for smooth words! God’s judgment is at hand. This is a time in our lives to preach brimstone and hell’s fire!

When people see how convicted we are that they are on a path to a place as horrific as hell, some of them will at least see our love for them. They may see us as lunatics, but they will see that there is a clear separation between what the church organization preaches, and what true ministers of God preach. The church is broken. It simply doesn’t work anymore. We love a good worship band, music, and laughter. But we need a stronger leadership that requires abandoning everything we know, and getting uncomfortable with things that we should know. I can’t imagine getting comfortable with Jesus when I have so much undelete sin in me. Holding back half the Word of God, the meat of the word, is not doing ourselves any favors! Blessings? We got them for sure, but it’s a long hard road ahead of us, and it’s not so easy as it seems. Many want to imagine a paved highway of gold, but we know it’s a rocky, sharp road with pitfalls.

If we attempt to lead those that would follow us down that paved highway of gold, what do you suppose they will start doing when they find that it’s not that easy? They will stop following us. Our identity will be transformed from one who watches out for our own interests to true watchman—those who are invested in the eternities of others.

“Son of man, I have made you a watchman to the house of Israel. Whenever you hear the word from My mouth, then warn them from Me. When I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ and you do not warn him, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way that he may live, the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand” (Ezek. 3:17-18).

Our cry must be: “No! Please! Understand that your lifestyle will result in a horror that you can’t even imagine. You will never have even a moment of relief. Please, repent, turn, let God’s love overwhelm you!”

Some might suggest that I’m suggesting that behavior modification is the key to salvation. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The keys to death, hell and the grave were retrieved by Jesus Christ, the only one who could do what was necessary to save mankind from destruction.

“When I saw Him, I fell at His feet as though I were dead. Then He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, ‘Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am He who lives, though I was dead. Look! I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death'” (Rev. 1:17-18).

However, it does remain true that unrepentant participation in sin absolutely does disqualify us from a relationship with Jesus. The fact that homosexuals unapologetically confess to participating in behavior that is forbidden by God is a clear indicator that they are not saved. The fact that those who are pro-abortion are set in their ways and determined to keep murder legal in America is evidence that they are clearly not in a legitimate relationship with Jesus.

It is fully appropriate to preach without apology that continuing in those (and other) sins without repentance and without making Jesus the Lord and Master of their lives will end terribly for them.

People need to hear the prophets shouting the alarms of eternal destruction that comes to those in rebellion to God!

“So he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. For I am tormented in this flame.’ But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things. But now he is comforted and you are tormented. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf, so that those who would pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’ He said, ‘Then I pray you, father, to send him to my father’s house, 28 for I have five brothers, to testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets. Let them hear them” (Luke 16:24-29).

Those who live in sexual sin outside of the camp will be judged, as will those who live in sexual sin in the camp will. Unforgiveness, hatred, lust, gossip and many other sins will have the exact same result as those in the world whom we would call wild and deviant.

“You have heard that it was said by the ancients, ‘You shall not murder,’ and ‘Whoever murders shall be in danger of the judgment.’ But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ shall be in danger of the Sanhedrin. But whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be in danger of hell fire'” (Matt. 5:12-22).

“You have heard that it was said by the ancients, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. And if your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away. For it is profitable that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body be thrown into hell” (Matt. 5:27-30). However, the truth that we must deal with sin in the camp doesn’t erase our responsibility to preach the full counsel of Scripture to all. It highlights it.

Hell is awaiting millions of people, both in and out of the church, and we must make that known! So few actually even know or believe that hell is their future. They presume all is well. So few are letting them know that they are but a breath away from horror!

“He told them another parable, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. But when the shoots had sprung up and produced fruit, the weeds also appeared. So the servants of the landowner came and said to him, “Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? Then where did the weeds come from?” He said to them, “An enemy did this.” The servants said to him, “Will you then have us go and gather them up?” But he said, “No, lest while you gather up the weeds, you pull up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest, and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers: Gather up the weeds first and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn'” (Matt. 13:24-30).

It’s time for us to preach truth and to see the planet shaken by the firepower of God’s Word again.

It’s true love that will give people an opportunity to decide where they will spend their eternity.

“… and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 They shall be punished with eternal destruction, isolated from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power” (2 Thess. 1:7-9).

Isaiah clearly revealed truth and people had a choice. They scoffed at the idea that they would go to hell, but at least blood would not be found on Isaiah’s hands.

“Therefore, hear the word of the Lord, O scoffers, who rule this people who are in Jerusalem, because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death, and with hell we are in agreement. The overflowing scourge shall not come to us when it passes through, for we have made lies our refuge and under falsehood we have hid ourselves” (Is. 28:14-15).

People Must Hear the Truth About Hell Today

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was cast into the sea and gathered all kinds of fish. When it was full, they drew it to shore, sat down, and gathered the good into baskets, but threw the bad away. So shall it be at the end of the world. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth” (Matt. 13:47-50).

For if God did not spare the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness to be kept for judgment; and if He did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, making them an example to those afterward who would live ungodly lives; and if He delivered righteous Lot, who was distressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked (for that righteous man lived among them, and what he saw and heard of their lawless deeds tormented his righteous soul day after day); then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trial, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the Day of Judgment, especially those who walk after the flesh in pursuit of unclean desires, and despise authority. They are presumptuous and arrogant, and are not afraid to slander the angelic beings. Whereas angels, who are greater in power and might, do not bring slanderous accusations against them before the Lord. But these people are like irrational animals, born to be captured and destroyed. They speak evil of the things that they do not understand, and in their corruption they will be destroyed. They shall receive the wages of unrighteousness. They count it a pleasure to carouse in the daytime. They are blots and blemishes who revel in their own deception while they carouse together with you. They have eyes full of adultery that cannot cease from sin. They entice unstable souls. Their hearts are trained in greed. They are cursed children!” (2 Pet. 2:4-14).

Contrary to popular belief, a revelation of hell, when it truly hits people absolutely does result in them running into the arms of a loving God. But not when the revelation of hell is not preached! Then it’s truly an abomination!

“Anyone whose name was not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire” (Rev. 20:15).

God’s love is made more evident when contrasted with the truth of hell.

The bottom line is simple: We cannot erase the Word of God. It must be preached in fullness. The result will be many current homosexuals, liars, adulterers, murderers and others falling desperately in love with Jesus.

“I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God shall add to him the plagues that are written in this book. 19 And if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the Book of Life and out of the Holy City and out of the things which are written in this book” (Rev. 22:18-19).

He who was seated on the throne said, ‘Look! I am making all things new.’ Then He said to me, ‘Write, for these words are faithful and true.’ He said to me, ‘It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the spring of the water of life to him who thirsts. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the abominable, the murderers, the sexually immoral, the sorcerers, the idolaters, and all liars shall have their portion in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone. This is the second death” (Rev. 21:5-8).

That’s the contrast we must have in today’s preaching. Reveal the spring of the water of life and the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. It’s how Jesus preached, after all.

Isn’t Sin More Fun?

Christian Living, Encouragement | Posted by Eddy Damas
Feb 16 2016

The question caught my attention. I know all too well what sin can do, and does do to a person. But is sin itself more fun? More fun than what? It seems that we struggle as much as when we don’t sin than when we actually do.

I’ve done many stupid things in my life, as we all have. But the stupid things have their consequences…falling asleep behind the wheel wasn’t that great of a feeling when I rear ended someone, especially when it came down to court dates, and all the suffering I caused my mother. I’ve gone horribly wrong with my finances (greed, and not being a good steward), so the consequences, as one can imagine, is that I struggle every day. Getting involved with a woman was fun, until she broke my heart when she annouced her marriage to someone else (Thank God in the end…but really??!!!)

No, sin definitely is not more fun. It can break a Christian man’s heart when he realizes that although he has chased after God, he has failed! And the realization is that even when the Christian has found God, there still remains sin in his life. And that sin is definitely horrible to deal with!

But thank God there is still grace! I fall on a daily basis. Sometimes I face periods where I don’t feel God at all. I know He is still there, but at the same time I keep reaching up and out for Him. And the act of reaching up and out consumes me.

But sin still holds me down. It beckons to me “Come and dance with me”. And like a mindless zombie…I dance the dance well.

To become a spotless bride is difficult. But it’s even more difficult when you play with God, knowing all the time that you shouldn’t.

Our Babylon!

Feb 13 2016

A question that crossed my mind recently. As many close to me would know, I am not in favor of government, nor political practices. In high school, I got a passable grade in government class, and to my admittance, that whole semester bored me to sleep. Nothing has really changed. I don’t know all the current issues the country is facing, except perhaps the immigration/deportation issue. I don’t follow, and never have followed, anything that the current President, nor any former President has ever said.

The language used in the polls and questionnaires has always been a source of confusion for me. The only thing that got to me the last presidential election was whether or not to allow gay marriage. Of course, I voted no.

Everything that is going on in the White House…from lawmakers to scandals…from who’s in, to who’s out has always disinterested me.

I did vote for our current President. I did so because it seemed the lesser of two evils. So don’t blame me if I never vote again. 🙂

I am reminded of the Bible story where the Isrealite people wanted a king to rule over them. The prophet Samuel sternly warned them of the consequences of their choice. Today the same choice is absolutely astonishing similar.

I had a thought: What if the only part of history that does not repeat itself is the history of God sacrificing His Begotten Son for us?

Looking at the news, it seems very clear that as a nation we are not headed for a positive outcome. I hate to refer to the great Babylon, because I believe that where once that great city was in fact, a city or possible a nation, I now believe that it’s the entire population of the planet earth. We have seen countries such as Cuba and Argentina succumb to economic ruin…but the fact is clear that our country is headed, and is, in the middle of one of the greatest down turns our generation has ever seen.

The prosperous leadership that once lead us a few years ago…Reagan, Carter, Bush Sr. have all faded into the midst. There’s been an uprising of internal violence in the past few years since our present leadership has taken over. We’ve seen plenty of police hate crimes…from police brutality to brutality against the police. I am sure that if Beyounce were to step into a police uniform she wouldn’t be dissing the countries Law Enforcement. Myself, as a Christian, still have a deep respect for our uniformed public servant. It takes a LOT of courage to put on a uniform with a badge knowing that possibly you aren’t going to live another day. It takes further courage to understand the hatred people have of you just because you uphold the law. Perhaps if Beyounce (and her husband) knew the facts, they would be slow to speak.

But the fact is that if you comply with the law enforcement officials of this country, it will go well with you. Perhaps I watch too much of the TV show Cops. But I believe if you do wrong, you suffer the consequences. Really, that’s a know fact that is first found biblically.

That’s the thing that this generation doesn’t understand, it’s somehow been lost to them. The whole era of Martin Luther King Jr, and what he worked so hard to established has been lost. Dr. King was always the peacemaker, looking to establish equal rights for all. Perhaps if his “I Have A Dream” speech were publicly aired at least once a month, perhaps it would once again turn the tide. Right now all we seems to have that’s turning the tide in a wrong direction is the “Black Lives Matter” movement.

Have we as a nation gone after strange gods? Worshipped with strange fire? Our nation is far cry from what it once was. Prosperity and decency are seemingly nowhere to be found Perhaps, if we lift our voices to God, much as the captive Israelites did, God would once again hearken His precious ears to our voices.

This is our Babylon…..

Paint your leaf

Be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless (v.58).

In his short story “Leaf by Niggle,” J. R. R. Tolkien describes a kindhearted, perfectionistic painter who failed to complete the landscape that became his life’s work. Because he was kind, Niggle often helped his neighbors rather than work on his painting. And because he fretted over details, he only managed to paint the first leaf on the first tree. He died with apparently little to show for his life. His “one beautiful leaf” was placed in the town museum “and was noticed by a few eyes.”

But when Niggle entered the presence of God, he found a surprise waiting for him. Tolkien writes, “Before him stood the Tree, his Tree, finished . . . its leaves opening, its branches growing and bending in the wind that Niggle had so often felt or guessed, and had so often failed to catch. He gazed at the Tree, and slowly he lifted his arms and opened them wide. ‘It is a gift!’ he said.”

Do you wonder if the things you weren’t able to finish because you were doing good to others possess any value? Paul concludes his long chapter on the resurrection by promising that your works will follow after you. They will result in God’s reward, so “always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless” (1 Corinthians 15:58).

As with Niggle, you may feel that you’ve barely “gotten a leaf out.” But God will incorporate that leaf into His “transformed” creation (vv.51-53). He will fill you with the joy of His presence, surrounded by the most beautiful landscape you could ever imagine. Like a master artist adding depth and color to the squiggles of a child, so God graciously includes our efforts in the world He’s building. So go ahead, paint your leaf! —Mike Wittmer

Read 1 Corinthians 3:5-15 to learn what will happen to our works that aren’t eternally significant and valuable.

What’s your “leaf”? What will motivate you to work diligently on it, regardless of success or failure?
